Municipal Library of Prague

Prague’s municipal library wanted to digitize documents in various formats and books to preserve and make accessible Prague’s Jewish literature.

Approach & Solution

In 2015, the Prague City Library was awarded a grant from the European Economic Area and Norwegian funds as part of the PRALIT project, designed to preserve and make accessible Prague Jewish literature. The main objective was to digitize various documents with a Jewish theme (potentially rare and from the collections of the music department and archives) and thus popularize them. These include periodicals, novels and collections of poetry, mainly in Czech and German, but also in French, Russian and English. All date from the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th.

The main objective of the Prague City Library is to acquire exceptional cultural objects, process them and ensure their conservation while presenting them to the public.

Following a call for tenders, the following solution was chosen:

  • a server with storage functionality
  • book scanning scanners and imaging software (all subsequently supplied by i2S): CopiBook Cobalt HD scanner for scanning standard format documents and DigiBook Suprascan II scanner for non-standard format documents.
  • image processing software: LIMB Processing
  • a powerful image processing control unit, with side-lighting system, and OCR software licensed to handle 30,000 pages per month.

The i2S products are designed to help the institution digitize 165,000 pages and make them available to the public via the Kramerius digital library.
